NIKE TRAINING CLUB 3.0

NTC is an award-winning fitness app, making free personal training a reality for anyone with a smartphone.

Getting lean, toned and strong have always been the backbone of the NTC experience, but for the third release Nike wanted to introduce a yoga program spearheaded by Master Trainer Traci Copeland. Robin was Lead Creative with AKQA to help Nike bring yoga to NTC.

NIKE DESIGN SYSTEM
NIKE VC AND EXPERIENCE CENTRE

Prior to 2016, Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club had their own distinct styles, but with the NTC 3.0 release, Nike+ app also landed. Nike+ gives access to Nike’s most exclusive products and events, and offers a seamless connection to NRC, NTC and SNKRS apps. To ensure a consistent experience across all four products it was essential that we used a shared Nike+ design language. We worked with Nike’s own Oregon based design team to create Nike VC; a concise atomic design system that follows the foundations model featuring foundations, components, and patterns.

This system served to create a joined-up experience, while also dramatically increasing productivity across the teams and agencies. It allowed us to really focus on the experience and content, and be confident that design would scale elegantly.

As Nike VC became adopted and before NTC kicked off in earnest, I worked with the Omega team (Nike+ app) on a proactive project to create a larger, global design system called Nike Experience Centre.
This would be a wider system, featuring guidance across all digital Nike territories including UX, brand, data, accessibility, content strategy and testing, to serve as a single source of truth.
Again, this would serve to align digital products and services from a brand and experience perspective, and allow teams to produce and iterate on ideas faster.

PRE-SESSION

NTC pre-workout screens feature basic information about the workout and, a breakdown of all the drills within that workout. Tapping a drill reveals a short clip on how the exercise should be performed.

Showing yoga pre-session drill lists in this way presents some challenges. Poses are usually static, but the transitions between them differ depending on which poses the user is moving between. We prototyped and tested a number of approaches…

IN-SESSION

We designed the in-session experience with two views. A fullscreen video approach aimed at beginners which more clearly shows the movements, and a self-guidance view which lists the poses with visual timers. This is aimed at more experienced practitioners who are happy with just VO.

POST-SESSION

To help athletes make the most of their NTC yoga workouts we added a full index of all poses and flows. These highlight any relevant clips, descriptions of transitioning in and out and key points to remember.
It also shows which level of the pose has been achieved by the user with a breakdown of benefits.

NIKE+ INTEGRATION

To make yoga a core pillar of the NTC experience, we sought users feedback and gave them the opportunity to confer with Master Trainers, created yoga events for Nike+ members and offered expert commentary, all in the Nike+ Club.
